Montgomery "Scotty" Scott was a a Human Starfleet officer serving in the 23rd century. He was recruited by James T. Kirk to replace Olson as chief engineer of the USS Enterprise before the battle of Earth in 2258. 

Scott was sent to the Federation outpost on Delta Vega with his assistant, Keenser, in late 2257, six months before the destruction of Vulcan. He believed it to be punishment for using Admiral Archer's prized beagle as a test subject for transwarp beaming, and being unable to locate the beagle afterward. In 2258, Spock Prime helped fix this transport problem by giving Scott the finished version of the governing equation the other Scotty had completed in the future. The final detail Scott needed was to construct the equations from the perspective that outer space, not the ships, was moving. Using the new calculations, James T. Kirk and Scott were able to beam aboard the Enterprise while it was moving at warp.
